Recently I shut down my dell 1525 laptop by taking out the battery. Now when i start it up it says it didnt shut down properly. So when I boot it up it’s screen is black with just a cursor on it. How can i fix this?(I’ve tried to boot it up in safe mode)
Assuming your OS is Windows XP, you could hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, then open Task Manager. From there, click File => New Process, and type “explorer.exe” and hit Enter or click OK. This should cause your Start menu to appear along with your desktop icons.
Normally you shouldn’t have to do this manually. Once you get access to the Start menu, you should insert your Windows XP disc, then click Start => Run, and type “sfc /scannow”. This will run the System File Checker, which will basically scan the Windows system files and if it finds any problems it’ll copy files from the CD.
If that doesn’t help, you should also use a spyware scanner like SpyBot or Malwarebytes to look for and fix any problems. Spyware or viruses can cause anomalous behavior like this.
